Where she'd been drowning calmly in a pool of still water.

She woke up just as we were passing the coastline and insisted we stop so she could get her feet wet. She said it reminded her of the strange dream she'd had the night before.

I drove all night following the painted white lines. I kept glancing over at my passenger to convince myself she was real. The two of us were a pair. I couldn't help but think we were a couple of deer caught in headlights.

dead end to nowhere

I told her to get in that I'd give her a ride to the next town. But she insisted on sticking with me even though I told her every road was a dead end and led to nowhere.

She said she'd woken up next to a strange billboard but couldn't remember who she was or how she'd gotten there. I didn't know whether or not to believed her.

miles to go before I sleep

My car continued to eat up the miles as the sun dipped into the horizon and darkness cloaked the night. Then suddenly, a figure appeared out of nowhere to flag me down. I had to slam down hard on the brakes not to hit her.

chance encounter

I passed empty fields, and abandoned houses desperate for some sort of connection, or chance encounter, to make sense of it all.

all signs point west

But I was through trying to convince anyone of anything. So I got back in my car and drove west towards the youth of my future.

But I told her not to worry about me because I was a man willing to get in the ring. She didn't look impressed.

She told me I'd pick up a passenger but to be cautious because nothing was as it seemed.

I pulled off to the side of the road where a psychic offered to read my future.

And then I saw it. It was like the sign was talking to me, and only to me.

I found myself back on the road looking for a sign, any sign.

By morning I was anxious to get back on the road.

Only, I couldn't sleep. My head was too full with unanswered questions.

I decided I'd better get a room for the night, figure it all out in the morning.

And a train coming at me from the other direction.

I chased after him but all I saw was a woman on the wrong side of the tracks.
