She woke up just as we were passing the coastline and insisted we stop so she could get her feet wet. She said it reminded her of the strange dream she'd had the night before.
I drove all night following the painted white lines. I kept glancing over at my passenger to convince myself she was real. The two of us were a pair. I couldn't help but think we were a couple of deer caught in headlights.
I told her to get in that I'd give her a ride to the next town. But she insisted on sticking with me even though I told her every road was a dead end and led to nowhere.
She said she'd woken up next to a strange billboard but couldn't remember who she was or how she'd gotten there. I didn't know whether or not to believed her.
My car continued to eat up the miles as the sun dipped into the horizon and darkness cloaked the night. Then suddenly, a figure appeared out of nowhere to flag me down. I had to slam down hard on the brakes not to hit her.
